I was the only one who could make that change

I was always a person who liked a drink, but one day my life changed. I was in a car accident which gave me bad back injuries that put me in pain I had never experienced before. I was having a bottle of wine one night when I thought ‘this is helping the pain’.

The weeks soon went by and my drinking became a nightly occurrence. One bottle became two and when that wasn’t enough, I started to drink vodka. By the end of it, I was drinking half a litre of vodka a day. I’d wake up in the mornings shaking, I had started phoning in sick at work more and more, so I could start drinking earlier. Life wasn’t worth living anymore, I was suffering from depression and felt like I was losing everything around me.

I knew I had to do something and that I was the only one who could make that change. I contacted my local drug and alcohol centre to book an appointment to start my new journey.

I am now at the point in my recovery where I am ready to give back and help people with addiction and their families get on the right road. Kennedy St allows me to do so. I first started to attend the catch-up meeting on a Monday morning to meet and get to know the other volunteers and see how and what they worked on. Now I’m researching, doing CRB checks for the newcomers, and I’ve joined as a co-host on our Recovery Connects workshop, and as a recovery mentor.

Get help now and call Kennedy Street. If you want recovery they can point you in the right direction.  Tomorrow can always be day one! The first day of your new start. Trust me, you won’t look back.

If you or someone you know needs help with addiction then please feel free to get in contact
